Loving On Fayetteville Arkansas

Loving on Fayetteville Arkansas | Fayetteville is the original Northwest Arkansas City recognized by the nation as the go to place.  We love its famous slogan of “Keep Fayetteville Funky” and we agree!  Fayetteville is the largest city in Northwest Arkansas, home of the University of Arkansas, the Walton Arts Center, the Dickson Street Entertainment District – the amazing and famous Fayetteville Farmer’s Market to mention a few Fayetteville delights!

Fayetteville has a beautiful historic district yet also keeps up with the growing demand of the urban population with all the modern amenities.  Surrounded by remarkable biking & walking trails – a beautiful lake in Fayetteville Lake, large city parks and rumor has it one the most incredible recycling programs in the nation – hey – it’s the little big things sometimes.   I found a site that really enhances and describes Fayetteville well – it’s called Experience Fayetteville (it’s the convention and visitors bureau but I like their vibe on the website) – enjoy!

Whether you’re into living in a downtown condo or townhouse with neighborhood walkability or a big yard and family home – Fayetteville has it all.

One thing is for sure and we love it – we’ve totally out grown the legacy of Northwest Arkansas – cities staying city oriented – NOW – we are Northwest Arkansas oriented.  Here’s what we mean – we all travel back and forth between these amazing cities – pretty much daily!

We encourage you – if from Bentonville go visit and hang in Fayetteville and vice versa – if from Fayetteville – get out – and indulge in Rogers, Bentonville, Springdale & Siloam Springs.  The blending and inclusion of each is beautiful – a treat really.  Inclusion and moving love beyond boundaries, seeing Northwest Arkansas as a whole – a community – including our bedroom cities as well.  We encourage you to unfold those arms and enjoy ALL of Northwest Arkansas’ variety, beauty, personalities, charm, culture, character, connections…

Variety – ahhhh – it is the spice of life in Northwest Arkansas – wouldn’t you agree?

Nature is the Best Supplement for Leadership

Nature is the Best Supplement for Leadership

Research shows that the practice of spending time in nature is good for your mind, body, and spirit. But how does nature impact our wellbeing?

As an Executive Coach for emerging women leaders, I often hear my clients ask, “What can I do to feel less stressed and feel better in an ever-changing, ever-demanding career and life?”  (Ever feel that way?)

One of the most effective, low-cost ways to recharge your fatigued brain is nature therapy, or what is commonly called, “forest therapy”.  A growing body of science is showing that nature is good for you. That includes spending time in nature, but it even means looking at natural scenes out a window.

The basics behind the “nature is healthy” concept goes back decades. A classic study found that hospital patients recovered from surgery quicker if their room offered a view of nature compared to those who looked out on a brick wall.

Experts in both natural science and psychotherapy are touting the effects of nature on the human body and mind, as well. According to psychotherapist and owner of East Sooke Counselling, based in Canada, Sarah Nakatsuka, ‘walking in nature’ is part of treatment for her clients and that connecting to nature is a wonderful way feel better – mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Spending time in natural spaces can boost the immune system, positively change moods, and may reverse muscle tension and decrease blood pressure. Furthermore, time in nature or viewing nature scenes increases our ability to pay attention. It also provides a respite for our overactive minds, refreshing us for new tasks.

“Forest Therapy” is one exercise that not only do I regularly practice, but also encourage my clients to incorporate in their daily routines to feel less stressed and restore psychological wellbeing, meaningfulness, and vitality.

So…literally…take a hike!

In the Northwest Arkansas and surrounding area, we are fortunate enough to multiple ways to have easy access to trails, parks, and places to enjoy nature scenes. Here are just a few of my favorites to explore whether you are new or local to our area.

No Sleep Jams Everything Up

According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep deficiency can be linked to a number of health issues, including obesity.

I had the opportunity to meet with Scott Tassin of Cloud 9 Mattress Outlet. He shared their core purpose,

“Our MISSION is to get people sleeping well.”

This focus allows them to better serve our community with a quality product and great customer service.

What Makes You Different?  The most powerful difference is price.

My question to Scott was simple, what makes Cloud 9 different from other retail mattress stores? His answers surprised me. The most powerful difference is price.  This price difference comes about due to overstocks, mismatched covers and close out fabrics of well-known and new top brands such as Tempur-Pedic, Sealy, Simmons and Serta.  They sell many of their mattresses at 40% to 80% off of the price of other retailers in Northwest Arkansas. They also extend service discounts to teachers, police officers, first responders, medical personnel and the military.  Customers can also purchase furniture at a 10 to 30% discount.

What else sets you apart?  Team members are trained to be sleep experts.

While price is important when purchasing a bed, Scott said that the other major factor that sets Cloud 9 apart in the mattress market is their staff and compensation plan.  Each employee is more than just a sales associate. Before they hit the floor, team members are trained to be sleep experts, studying sleep habits and sleep solutions so their clients will get the right bed.

Speak of one more thing that is unique about you or your store?  Focused on client experience and job satisfaction.

Additionally, the sleep experts are compensated with bonuses based on how the store does, not on individual compensation.  This, Scott believes, improves client experience and promotes job satisfaction. Sleep experts are also encouraged to recognize their clients with a hand written thank you note.  Those sleep experts who have moved to new opportunities take their knowledge with them.  He proudly said, “We have never had an employee quit because they didn’t like working here.”

Scott and his wife B.J. relocated to Northwest Arkansas from Monroe, LA 15 years ago and opened their store, July 1, 2003.  Cloud 9 Mattress Oullet celebrated 14 years doing business in Bentonville and serving Northwest Arkansas this year.  I met with Scott in their store at 1208 SE Walton Blvd in Bentonville.

Scott says that most of their business is referral and repeat customers.  So, when you go to Cloud 9 Mattress Outlet, tell them Bex with Talk of the Town sent you!!

JJ’s a local favorite

One of the most important factors to making a business successful is setting it apart from the competition. JJ’s Grill CEO and owner Jody Thornton understands this need and has created a string of restaurants known as JJ’s that gives a unique experience to the customer while providing a space for all ages to enjoy.

He started his chain in Northwest Arkansas and now has several JJ’s Grill locations in Central Arkansas as well. He recently opened up the JJ’s Beer Garden and Brewing Company in Fayetteville, which has its own unique feel. Downtown Bentonville will soon be the home to JJ”s Pour House.

In an interview with Talk of the Town NWA, owner and CEO Jody Thornton detailed all of what goes into any JJ’s. He spoke about several aspects that make each JJ’s entity great.

When asked about his inspiration for JJ’s, Thornton said that he wanted a place that could provide “a good personal relationship with a guest” while at the same time is “a combination of the best places I wanted to go.”

This includes everything from a family-friendly atmosphere to making customer service a top priority for both Thornton and his crew.

When referring to Northwest Arkansas, Thornton expressed his fondness for the area.

“We love Northwest Arkansas, it’s our home. Raised some kids here. It’s a great place to live, it’s beautiful and has got a nice price for living. Great homes, great neighborhoods, great people—there’s just a lot to do,” he said.

After a suggestion to open another restaurant, Thornton looked for a good feeling area to do so. “Found a couple of investors and just tried to find the right spot. I just liked that spot in Rogers and thought it was a good place to start,” said Thornton. (The first JJ’s Grill was in Rogers).

One particular addition that Jody Thornton is fond of is the live music that is played in all JJ’s.

“Living in Austin, there’s live music all the time and here there wasn’t a commitment. I wanted a restaurant that was committed to live music every night,” he said. “It (live music) adds something to the city, it adds something to the culture, it adds something to people that want to be in the area. We’ve really worked hard to create something different.”

The atmosphere at each JJ’s can be seen vividly through every patron that enjoys both food and either alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. Children under the age of 12 eat free with one adult every night at each JJ’s, be it the Beer Garden or one of the Grills.

What’s next for Thornton and JJ’s? We’ve already mentioned the Pour House opening soon, but there is also a plan to start having the JBGB-brewed beer distributed to all the JJ’s.

“We wanted to continue our brand and we saw the next best arm of that to be a brewery because we sell so much beer in the locations,” he said.

We wish him and his crew the best of luck as they shine in Northwest Arkansas and beyond.
